Chapter 15
âI knew I would find you here.â Lukeâs smile turned lopsided as he crossed his arms across his chest and leaned against the doorframe.
âI did not think I would find you here.â Liriya composed herself from her surprise and answered. Her heart began racing, but she ignored it.
Seeing him at the dinner after a long day, she had avoided meeting his eyes. Liriya didnât know why, but she clearly didnât like the fact that he chose Lady Riley as the first elite to spend his day with, after all that he had said to her last night. Seeing an icy Lady Riley warm up when they met her at the dinner hadnât helped matters.
Therefore, Luke wasnât going to get anything like a smile from her.
Lukeâs smirk only grew. âThatâs because you had no idea Iâd been planning on coming to you tonight, the moment you entered the palace gates today.â
âOh, really?â Liriya cocked her head to the side.
Luke hummed, fixing his eyes on her with a glint in them.
âWhy?â
Luke snorted a laugh and dropped his folded arms. He shook his head. âYou ask a lot of questions, Liriya.â
Liriya crossed her arms. âMaybe it is because I need answers.â
Luke held a hand out to her. âCome with me and I will give you some answers.â
Liriya glanced down at his offered hand, and every instinct pleaded with her to accept it. She met his gaze. âThe elites are not allowed to wander out in the late hours.â
âNo. But they are allowed to go with the king wherever he wants to take them for whatever activity he has picked for their time with himâwhenever it is,â he said, not withdrawing the hand.
Liriyaâs fragile defenses almost fell but she put them up with the very little strength she had. âThe day is not over yet and Lady Riley is the chosen elite to spend the day with you.â
âBut youâre the elite of the night,â he said, eyes softening with a look that sent Liriyaâs heart galloping. He added, âAnd every other night of this Bridal Selection Period.â
At that, her defenses fell. Yet, she held back from smiling. She couldnât let herself be won over with a few words from him.
âWell, you cannot reject the king.â She shrugged dramatically and dropped her arms.
âMay I come inside? The others shouldnât see me here, and definitely not know Iâm taking you out.â
âOh, would they blow up the castle?â Liriya asked skeptically, but stepped back anyway.
âI donât want to find out,â Luke quipped. He stepped inside and closed the door behind him, but left it ajar. He peered past her at her sisters and grinned. âHey, how was your first day?â
âAs good as it can be, thank you Luke.â Ella grinned back. âHow about yours?â
âNot bad,â he said, planting his hands in the pocket of his trousers. âDo you mind if I steal your sister for a night date?â
âOf course we would not mind,â Sessa answered, with a big grin on her face that Liriya hadnât seen in a long while.
